ART
Listened to Living Proof Radio’s episode 211 featuring Futura 2000, twice: absolute icon of the graffiti scene who’s worked with The Clash, Mo Wax and Nike. Made a huge impact on my style back in the day. Also learned a fair bit more about the LA-based artist, Wes Lang, thanks to Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton. If you like skulls as a theme (which I wouldn’t say I do, normally, you should give it a listen).
EVENTS
Had a day at the low key classic car show just down the road from me at Burford House Gardens in my old childhood town of Tenbury Wells last Sunday; this Sunday I might just pop along to the British Hillclimb Championship at Shelsley Walsh, which is a little further on from Tenbury by 11 miles.
MOVIES
Garth Davis-directed Lion from 2016, 1986’s Manhunter from Michael Mann, and Mud, which came out in 2012 and is the first film anyone saw Jacob Seth Lofland act in: in my mind outshines the rest of the cast.
MUSIC
DJ ZINC on Eruption 101.3FM from March 17th 1995, Magic, Alive! by McKinley Dixon, this year’s Salsa Verde by Tom Caruana, and 2011’s Get Live Get Down by DJ X-Rated: played Mo Sick’s Take It Back around 10 times in one day back then, played it twice as much this week (a great MC that doesn’t appear to have done much else).
DRINKS
Two pints of Dark Star’s Hop Head this week in Covent Garden’s Lamb & Flag: a cracking boozer off Floral Street near Garrick Street (found on Rose Street) there to meet two chaps from two magazine distributors (Neil and James from Magcirc and RA & Olly). To cover all bases, Jason from TouchTree was there too to showcase his interesting print-to-digital progressive web platform. By late afternoon it was just Neil and I drinking a few turns away down the road on Chandos Place in the far-smaller Harp where Harvey’s Sussex Best was on great form. Elsewhere in the week: mostly Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and Purity’s UBU.
READS
Hard Pack (ski magazine), an old copy of Carl’s Cars (a magazine about people) and the recently-launched No Way Back (an old but new publication that republishes music and pop culture writing from an earlier era).
WRITING
Beyond writing this very end-of-week Substack post I thankfully got to write about the best ever fast estate car ever, Volvo’s 850 T-5R (in my mind anyway), the time I took a lost nameless dog on a pub crawl (which we both enjoyed immensely), and a piece of fiction about a pub sign that follows someone home (my girlfriend’s only response was “should I be worried about you?”.
